Buying A Baby Crib - Mistakes To Avoid

No Last-Minute Shopping, Please!

I started shopping for a baby crib less than a month before my due
date for delivery. An experienced mom actually told me to buy one
at lest 2 months ahead and I think it is a good advice. This is
because you have to take into account out-of-stock problems,
delayed delivery or defective parts which require you to return the
crib and wait for another. If you shop at the last minute, you may
well end up without a crib when your baby is home.

Well, I’m a procrastinator, you see. Anyway, everything went
smoothly for me and my baby crib was delivered according to
schedule with no defects. Looking back, it certainly wasn’t wise at all
and you shouldn’t be doing last minute shopping like me!

Teething Rails

Having gone through the experience, I found that I made several
errors when choosing my baby crib. Firstly, I bought a crib with top
rails that didn’t have clear plastic fittings on them. When my son
began teething, he was also learning to stand. He would end up
standing and leaning against the sides of the crib while gnawing at
the top rails. So, my advice is buy a baby crib with those plastic
thingy on the top rails. They help to protect your baby’s gums and
you won't end up with teeth marks all over your crib.

Non-Foldable Crib

Secondly, I bought a non-foldable crib. When my son had outgrown
it at about 20 months, I needed to store the crib away as the space
in my home is limited. So, I needed to dismantle the whole crib. No
problem with that except that the durability and safety became a
concern. A wooden piece of furniture that you need to assemble,
dismantle and then re-assemble after 2 years of use may simply not
be so sturdy anymore. Therefore, buy a foldable crib if you are
planning to use it for the next baby but need to store it in the mean
time.

No Wheels

Lastly, the baby crib that I bought has no wheels on it. That means
I couldn’t push it to wherever I want, not even to the other side of
the room to let my baby have another view of things around him.
Although cribs without wheels seem to be sturdier, you would need
to consider the practicality aspect as well if you prefer your crib to
be more mobile.

How To Avoid Mistakes

So, if I were to shop for baby cribs today, I would definitely like mine
to incorporate the above 3 features. The lesson being different
people have different needs in their home. You just have to think
hard about what are yours and then shop for a crib that meets
those needs.

One solution is to go to an online store and look through cribs of
different styles and their features. Note down those features that
you want and then try to find a crib that matches your list as close
as possible. Just don’t be like me. I chose mine based on style and
color without considering other factors thinking all cribs are more or
less the same. So, go to a store such as
Baby Cribs Plus now and
do your homework!
